UNCIRCULATED BUSINESS STRIKES

The dies below were the regular run of dies used to strike the uncirculated pieces for sale. Some of them have the COPY stamp made as part of the die and some do not.

OBVERSE DIE VARIETIES

The first attempts at a 1796 dollar were not up to the standards set by Ron Landis so he kept at it until he was happy with the design. This resulted in 3 dies that were not intended for use striking replicas for sale. These were called the “First Design’ dies. The obverse on the left was struck with one of those dies, First Design #3. Eventually, this die came to be used as a standby die when others were out of service and it can be found paired with the first 4 reverse dies. Cool!

THE EDGE DIE

Another interesting facet of the Gallery Mint coin reproductions were the edge dies. These were also hand carved and applied to the edge of the blank during the upsetting process, the same as the originals. The image at the left shows the result of the edge die application. Very cool!
